According to Wikipedia, the veggie burger was invented in 1982. In my book, that makes a veggie burger and fries a classic meal.
I’ve been vegan for 30+ years so I’ve sampled quite a few veggie burgers over the past 3 decades. Some vegan patties were great and many were just okay, but I ALWAYS appreciated having a mediocre option instead of NO option at all.
When I traveled through Europe in the 1990s and 2000s, finding a veggie burger option at fast food establishments like McDonald’s and Burger King was very comforting. It took the burger joints in the USA quite a bit longer to have a vegan burger option at the national chain restaurants.
The Gardenburger was the first veggie burger I remember becoming the go-to veggie burger option in my local neighborhood. It was a great effort by a national brand, but I still found it a bit lacking in the taste department.
Over the past few years Beyond & Impossible have become the top veggie alternative meats at major restaurant chains. I like that these plant-based and gluten-free options are both delicious and widely available. If you haven’t tried them yet, you can sample them at some major fast-food chains.
The Beyond Burger Patty is served at Carl’s Junior and the Impossible Burger Patty is served at Burger King Restaurants. Give them a try on your next MEATLESS MONDAY adventure.
